Hundreds Injured in Train Accident in Punjab
Hundreds have been injured and at least 50 killed in a train accident during the Hindu festival of Dusshera in India. The train ran into a crowd of people in the northern Punjab state, near Amristar.
The train was travelling from Jalandhar to Amritsar and hit the crowd around 6:30 p.m. local time, with at least 200 injured and 50 reported dead. A crowd of people watching the fireworks was told shortly before the accident to move back toward the train tracks by organizers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, “Extremely saddened by the train accident in Amritsar. The tragedy is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required.”
Offices and places of education in Punjab are to be closed in a day of mourning, with the prime minister approving financial relief to those related to the dead in this accident. Many are fearful of the number of those injured or killed rising with time.
