West Hollywood Council Recommends Removal Of Trump’s Star On Walk of Fame

The West Hollywood City Council voted on Aug. 6 to approve a motion that called for the removal of President Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico and Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath brought the motion before the council. D’Amico said the vote was not based on politics. It was passed unanimously.

“The West Hollywood City Council did not pass the resolution because Donald Trump is a conservative or a Republican,” he told TheWrap. “Earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is an honor. When one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, people with disabilities or women — the honor no longer exists.”

According to the Daily Mail, the vote is not legally binding and is most likely symbolic. The most the council could do is send a formal letter regarding the request to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles city council.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an internationally recognized tradition that has become one of the most successful marketing ideas ever devised. Approximately 24 celebrities are inducted and given stars each year. The Hollywood Chamber is the originator and has been administering the honors for more than 50 years.

Trump received his star in 2007.

When the subject of removing Hollywood stars amid controversy, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has said in the past that it plans to keep the past stars intact on the walk.

“Once a star has been added to the walk, it is considered a part of the historic fabric of the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” former president and chief executive officer Leron Gubler told the LA Times in 2015 after calls to remove Bill Cosby’s star. “Because of this, we have never removed a star from the walk.”

Gubler announced his retirement earlier this year. According to the chamber, he will be stepping down before 2019.

The vote comes two weeks after Trump’s star was vandalized with a pick axe by 24-year-old Austin Clay. Clay has since been charged with felony vandalism charges and could face up to three years in prison if convicted.

Trump’s star was also vandalized in October 2016 in a similar incident.
