THE FALLACY OF ASSAULT WEAPONS- How Do We Prevent Shootings? Concealed Carry.
After a gunman killed 27 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the debate referred to today as ‘gun control’ has been everlasting. Some Americans say we need to find middle ground for gun control, others say gun control IS the middle ground. There have been no solutions as of August 6th, 2018. Proposed resolutions, such as the ‘Assault Weapons Ban of 2018’ (HR. 5087), have not been voted on, but aims at banning any semiautomatic assault weapon.
There was already a measure like this implemented in 1994-2004 named the ‘Federal Assault Weapons Ban’. It failed miserably.
A 2004 report from the National Institute of Justice pointed out that crime with an Assault Weapon decreased, but any benefits were “likely to have been outweighed by steady or rising use of non-banned semiautomatics.” A 2005 report from the National Research Council observed “A recent evaluation of the short-term effects of the 1994 federal assault weapons ban did not reveal any clear impacts on gun violence outcomes.”
The Columbine High School shooting also took place while the ban was in effect, when the perpetrator used a shotgun, handgun, and premature bombs.
What about the use of Assault Weapons in crime? FBI statistics points out that well under 2% of crime is committed by an Assault Weapon. Gun control advocacy groups say that semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 are “military-style assault weapons” made to be used for “war”. Contrary to the vast popular belief, the military uses fully-automatic rifles, which are regulated as “machine guns” by the National Firearms Act of 1934. The AR-15 only fires one bullet, even when holding down the trigger. Machine guns fire rapidly when holding the trigger.
Violent crime throughout the United States has decreased some 46%, a 42 year low, and the murder rate decreasing at 52%, a 49 year low. At the same time, the ownership of an AR-15 has reached over 4.5 million since 2013. The firearm most utilized during crime a murder is a handgun, reaching over 7100 compared to a rifle’s 374. There were nine times as many murders with knives, blunt objects (hammers, clubs, etc.), and “personal weapons” (hands, feet, etc.), as with rifles of any type.
After its ban on assault weapons and ‘large’ magazines in 1989, California saw a drastic increase in their crime by 26%. Extensive studies conducted by the Center for Disease Control and the National Academy of Science found zero evidence that ‘gun control’ effectively or flat-out reduced crime.
To date, there have been 63 school shootings since the Sandy Hook tragedy. What was missing? For starters, armed resource officers were not and STILL are not protecting the students of Sandy Hook, but are present at Newtown High School in Newtown, where both schools are located.
Why do independent school district board members not promote single entry points? All exterior doors must be monitored electronically to determine if they are fully closed and locked. Funneling student and faculty traffic to areas where persons can be observed and screened, which would allow metal detectors to detect if there is a weapon in ones bag.
All in all, what is the long-term solution rather than putting a band aid on the bleeding, just as firearm bans do?
Concealed carry is traced back all the way to 1813 in Kentucky and Louisiana when laws were passed to allow citizens to carry a concealed weapon in a measure of self defense. Apply that today, where millions of gun owners are also licensed concealed carriers.
But ask yourself the following: If you were in a movie theater, for example, and a person began to open fire, would you wait for the police and let a massacre unfold or would you want someone who has a firearm in his or her bag to apprehend the perpetrator before it’s too late?
THIS is common sense. The American people have been exhausted by the incessant and rampant discussion that is guns. Take into account, guns do not shoot themselves and carry many myths that have been bestowed upon them by liberal Democrats.
Is concealed carry working? Yes.
“A neighbor arrived at his home in Littlefield, Texas, saw the attack in progress, and armed himself with his handgun. He has a concealed handgun permit,” police said. “He came to the aid of the victims and pointed his weapon at the attacker, a male subject, who was armed with a knife [and] was assaulting a female and trying to take her car.”
“A concealed carrier critically wounded a man who opened fire at a crowded “peace” rally Saturday afternoon in Titusville, Florida, police said. The suspect got into a fistfight with another person at the ‘Peace in the City’ rally and back-to-school event at Isaac Campbell Park, returning later with a gun, police said. The suspect started shooting just after 5 p.m. and an armed bystander returned fire, shooting the suspect in the head, police said.
“An attempted robbery was thwarted after the would-be victim, who holds a concealed carry permit, shot the suspect in the butt. It happened Thursday around 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Citgo gas station near 35th and Silver Spring. Police say the suspect tried to rob a man, and that’s when he was shot.”
“After the man punched the female employee, another worker pulled a gun on the attacker. The employee that was attacked told TODAY’S TMJ4 the other worker has a concealed carry permit, and their boss allows them to carry a gun for their protection if they are licensed to do so.”
“The struggle began about 11:15 p.m. when the 23-year-old driver picked up two males in the 7400 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to Chicago Police. The males began to beat the driver and attempted to take his vehicle. The driver, who had a concealed-carry license, pulled out a handgun and chased the two males out of his vehicle, firing shots at them but missing, police said.”
“A Wisconsin man, using a gun licensed under a concealed-carry permit, shot and killed an alleged carjacker in his company’s parking lot, a city official said.”
The list is endless. This isn’t even considered controversial. It’s self-evident on how the effectiveness of concealed carry can be made use of in the most crucial of times. The point in case is simple: arguments about gun control in the United States will never cease to exist, as Liberal Democrats nor Conservative Republicans will get their fair share of a tit-for-tat discussion.
Concealed carriers are good samaritans. When will the U.S understand that?
