During Turning Point USA’s ‘High School Leadership Summit’ at The George Washington University in D.C, U.S Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley asked the high school audience, “Raise your hand if you’ve ever posted anything online to quote-unquote ‘own the libs,’”. Many did, and with that, she continued: “I know that it’s fun and that it can feel good, but step back and think about what you’re accomplishing when you do this — are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading?” Haley asked. “We’ve all been guilty of it at some point or another, but this kind of speech isn’t leadership — it’s the exact opposite.”
She hit the bullseye.
Many popular conservatives on social media platforms, such as Instagram, have used the same ad-hominem, childish rhetoric to boost their marketability to other young conservative Republicans. Take Rogan O’ Handley, also known as ‘DC_Draino’.
On Tuesday night, O’Handley attended President Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ rally in Tampa Bay, Florida. Amongst the crowd was CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta. O’Handley, without hesitation, felt the need to yell at Acosta: “Hey, Jim Acosta, you’re fake news!”
His social media presence gained more than 2,000 followers since and the video has reached over 62,000 views. O’Handley’s fans responded in the comments, with one saying, “Savage!! #fakenewsJim” and another saying, “Screw them all”.
Without any objection, that is not civil discourse nor debate. Simply put, nothing is gained and fuels even more fellow conservatives to cry out at leftist journalists solely because you don’t agree with them.
Another prime example is Grant Godwin, whose username is ‘the_typical_liberal’. He enjoys describing liberal Democrats as ‘goobersmacks’, ‘leftist idiots’, labeling New York socialist Alexandria Occasio-Cortez as a ‘gooberlipped stupid a**’, and called Nancy Pelosi a ‘dumba**’.
Grant has a little over 700,000 followers.
Outspoken conservative Republicans who continue to utilize extravagant language like so are retrogressing the United States’ political movement and influencing their young audience to spew nonsensical material against their classmates and/or coworkers. Absurdities like these should be replaced with fact-based debate.
Liberal Democrats, however, are no different. Calling President Trump an ‘orangutan’, a ‘cheeto’, or a ‘wankmaggot’ is beyond an intellectuals imagination.
