It was November 9th, 2016. The sequence of days during this week were interesting to say the least. I had come back from a field trip that day, knowing who the President-Elect of the United States of America was: Donald J. Trump. While I was oblivious to anything political at the time, many things went through my head: I laughed, I used ad-hominem rhetoric to convince my friends of how he is such a racist, homophobic, all of the above type of man, he’s going to have the nuclear codes at the snap of his finger, anything you could think a 13 year old was thinking.
Other thoughts such as, “How could a man who called Mexicans ‘rapists’ could’ve possibly become President?” “He’s going to build a wall and Mexico will pay for it?” At the time, it was inevitable to me that he ‘had to be stopped’ and followed the words of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“He can be impeached, right?” No. But soon after was going to be one of the greatest adventures and findings in my life.
To begin with, how did I get here? For starters, I was only aware of one news source: Cable News Network. I listened and read to what they had to say. Day after day, there was something new that either Brain Stelter, Don Lemon, or Anderson Cooper had to say about Donald Trump.
With a closed mind like mine, I was deliberately not listening to others and what they had to say. I was intentionally clueless and did not know any better. That is what many other Americans do to themselves today rather than seek out the truth.
The day is now July 23, 2017. Don’t ask me what led me to Google how a border wall could be funded, but what I found shook my world and caused my mind to shift into second gear. Remittances, increasing visa/border crossing fees, solar panels, utilizing confiscated drug money? These were details that I had never even considered until then.
Next was Trump’s ‘rapists’ comment that outraged liberal media outlets. Sure enough, he was referring to illegal immigrants, but how did I not know that? That very moment, I learned something new: the media has all of the power to skew something one says, which is exactly what I had been falling for. It all came to me at once.
However, the most common question I get, whether it be from readers, my friends, and mostly my family, is: “You’re Mexican. How can you support Trump?”
I have and never will abandon or disrespect my beautiful, gifting Mexican heritage and ancestry. It is always heart warming to travel to my father’s home state and know that my family is waiting for me.
I also know that I am the only Trump supporter throughout my blood relatives. And to answer that question, it’s simple. In fact, Ronald Reagan put it best: “Hispanics are conservative, they just don’t know it yet.” That’s exactly what happened to me.
I am not against legal immigration, I do not hate my people, and I do not want Mexico to fail.
I do not find any fault in that statement whatsoever. Over his year and a half of his presidency, President Trump has certainly had his ups and downs. What I can tell you is that he is not a morally good person, but what I can also tell you is that his leadership has led him to become the leader of the free world.
If there’s anyone that is still reading, there is one thing you should take away from this article. Do not allow the media to fool your mind to have them achieve their political agenda. It’s what has happened before and after the election and is still continuing to occur today.
