When I think of socialism, I think about the hundreds of millions of people that faced the pain and hardship that many went through. Whether it was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [USSR] , the Yugoslavian Socialists, or the The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi Party), it’s devastating. History has proven that, when a Socialist perspective is applied to the public hemisphere, the results are catastrophic, killing almost 83 million people in the time span of a little over 100 years.
Many on the left, however, are quick to defend the nonsensical differentiality between socialism and democratic socialism. The word ‘democratic’ is utilized to lure the American people from the legitimate side effects of the rotten doctrine. Moreover, organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America constantly try to attract Americans by using euphemisms, like so.
That’s what upcoming champion of ‘Democratic Socialists’ Alexandria Occasio-Cortez is enticing to Americans of New York’s 14th congressional district. Occasio is the paradigm of how the Democrats are becoming an unhinged and extremist party that has led to the creation of the social media trend, #walkaway, a hashtag for then-liberals who are now conservatives due to the lack of Democrats management.
Towards Occasio, her policies and stances have been proven to be illogical and silly. To begin with, her belief towards ‘abolishing ICE’ has begun a political revolution of some sort, with other New York Democrats jumping on her bandwagon. New York City mayor Bill De Blasio and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand both agreed to get rid of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
The only problem with the ‘Abolish ICE’ movement is midterm elections are approaching rapidly, and while the immigration debate will be ceaseless, Democrats have chosen the high road and risk losing more moderate votes. Democrats have now shifted their attention from the public’s horrendous image of the separation of families at the border onto an immigration agency similar to the Immigration Naturalization Service.
On top of that, a Harvard/Harris poll said that 3-in-4 swing votes oppose the Abolish ICE initiative. Eliminating the agency would allow 1.64M illegal immigrants freely into the country. President Trump is against the movement.
The second exasperated policy Occasio wants is a $15 minimum wage. On her Twitter, she retweeted a constituents tweet saying, “Fight for the working class and poor”. Raising the minimum wage is already a terrible idea, considering inflation and especially when not proportionate to the economic factors such as GDP growth. Besides, if her goal is to soar the minimum wage to simply fight poverty, she’s got the wrong idea. See, targeting low-wage employees is inefficient in achieving that objective.
How? The unemployed, for example, wouldn’t be directly benefited by a rising minimum wage because of their unemployment status. It would only bolster their welfare status.
The third self-destructive policy she would like to implement into the U.S is a single-payer healthcare system, also known as a universal healthcare system. As said in my previous articles, universal healthcare is anything but perfect. On her website, she says, “Almost every other developed nation in the world has universal healthcare. It’s time the United States catch up to the rest of the world in ensuring all people have real healthcare coverage that doesn’t break the bank.” (MORE: Why Universal Healthcare Doesn’t Work)
Interestingly enough, ‘developed nations’ such as Venezuela, which inflation has escalated almost 500,000% and where a cup of coffee in Venezuela now costs approximately one million Bolivars, embraces universal healthcare.
Cuba, whose leadership has become the epitome of why socialism embodies failure, has not had any success. In 1959, when Fidel Castro took power, GDP per capita for Cuba was $2,067 per year. Around 2/3s of Latin America, generally speaking, and about the same as Ecuador ($1,975), Jamaica ($2,541), Panama ($2,322) and 2/3s of Puerto Rico ($3,239). 40 years later, Cuba gained only $240 to $2,307, while Ecuador had $3,809, Jamaica at $3,670, Panama to $5,618 and Puerto Rico at $13,738.
Occasio wants to infringe on Americans 2nd Amendment rights and plans on banning assault weapons. She says, “Even in the United States, cities and states with strong gun laws have managed to cut gun violence significantly without running afoul of the Second Amendment. ” That statement could not be more inherently false.
The city of Baltimore, which presides in Maryland, carries both one of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation as well as ‘the most dangerous city in the United States‘. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence released a study proving the myth that cities with strict gun control also may tend to have a high homicide rate or gun related deaths.
She also wants to reinstate the ‘Federal Assault Weapons Ban’ from 1994, which was proven to be ineffective after the Columbine High School shooting, which left 15 students dead (including armed gunmen) when the perpetrators used shotguns. Last week, a man went into a newspaper outlet in Maryland and killed 5 people with a shotgun.
The New York ‘democratic’ socialist plans on not allowing any congressman or woman to take money from any pro-gun lobbying groups. On her website, she goes on to berate the National Rifle Association for ‘our children [to be put] at risk’. Contrary to popular belief, the NRA actually pushed to PROTECT children in schools by enforcing armed security guards in them.
The list continues where she states she plans on ‘restoring Glass Steagall’, a bill passed in 1933 aimed at coercing the largest banks to strip away their investment banking activities. For historical reference, this piece of legislation was passed to attempt to support around 9,000 failing, small rural banks during the Great Depression. Zero of them were attributed to investment banking.
Wanting to reinstate a modern day Glass Steagall Act would be preposterous and unproductive considering the immensely substantial influence electronic technology has had over the past 84 years. Occasio-Cortez most likely doesn’t understand that this policy decision would kill off massive banks that would not fail.
Bert Ely put it best: “Too-big-to-fail is a serious public-policy issue that 2010’s Dodd-Frank Act attempted to solve through such devices as giving regulators the powers and tools to resolve a large, troubled bank through an orderly liquidation.” (MORE: Alexandria Occasio-Cortez’s Issues)
To put the cherry on top, DNC Chairman Tom Perez said that Occasio-Cortez is the ‘future of our party‘. The 14th district of New York is heavily Democratic, making the path to Congress an easy breeze for her.
On The View, she could not separate the difference between Democratic Socialism and Socialism, rather obnoxiously deflected off the question and went on to say ‘you don’t just wake up one day and say I’m a capitalist.’
