A threat to democracy #7: Twitter and Jack Dorsey.
When reading the headline, you’d probably say I’m a hypocrite because I use one of the biggest social media platforms in the world, Twitter. It’s where I get my news from and look at arguments from both aisles. I’m able to stay in contact with my friends and family while also updating them and posting my articles. However, there’s a major problem with these two Silicon Valley giants: censorship.
No, this is not a conspiracy theory. It’s all been said and done, written in stone, and in the history books. Like many, you’d rather hear either your preferred bias from the political spectrum perspective. Unlike communist China or Putin’s Russia, if you say something Xi Jinping or the Kremlin doesn’t appreciate, you’ll never be seen again. Yet, in the United States, there is simply the First Amendment.
Sure, you have terms and services and whatnot, but the law is prioritized over anything else. So, what does this have to do with Twitter?
For one, Twitter has been on a hot streak of banning conservatives without committing anything terrible. Project Veritas, an organization aimed at exposing leftists for the wrong reasons, was successful in taking out some of Twitter’s senior employees. James O’ Keefe, a the founder and CEO of Project Veritas, went incognito and used a hidden camera to uncover Twitter’s censoring.
In this video, some Twitter employees explained the concept of ‘shadow banning’. Abhinov Vadrevu, a former Twitter Software Engineer, explains: ” [It is] to ban someone but they don’t know they’ve been banned, because they keep posting and no one sees their content. So they just think that no one is engaging with their content, when in reality, no one is seeing it.”
But this is towards liberals, right? Wrong. Olinda Hassan, a Policy Manager for Twitter, explains how Twitter is censoring the ‘shi**y people’. “Yeah. That’s something we’re working on. It’s something we’re working on. We’re trying to get the shitty people to not show up. It’s a product thing we’re working on right now.”
Project Veritas reported, “Former Twitter Engineer Conrado Miranda confirms on December 1st, 2017 that tools are already in place to censor pro-Trump or conservative content on the platform. When asked whether or not these capabilities exist, Miranda says, ‘that’s a thing.’
Former Twitter Content Review Agent Mo Norai on May 16th, 2017 said that Twitter specifically targets conservatives and pro-Trump advocates. Norai said, ““Yeah, if they said this is: ‘Pro-Trump’ I don’t want it because it offends me, this, that. And I say I banned this whole thing, and it goes over here and they are like, ‘Oh you know what? I don’t like it too. You know what? Mo’s right, let’s go, let’s carry on, what’s next?’
Norai also said that more left-leaning content would be prioritized on timelines with less political scrutiny, “It would come through checked and then I would be like ‘Oh you know what? This is okay. Let it go.’”
Norai goes on to say that this selection process was never Twitter policy, but they were following unwritten rules from the top:
“A lot of unwritten rules, and being that we’re in San Francisco, we’re in California, very liberal, a very blue state. You had to be… I mean as a company you can’t really say it because it would make you look bad, but behind closed doors are lots of rules.”
You can find the Project Veritas successful undercover mission here. But to know that colossus tech companies are limiting conservatives free speech is alarming and outrageous.
Twitter has banned conservative commentator Steven Crowder and two other members of the Crowder team. The suspension comes from Twitter after assaults on his character by leftists labeling him as a ‘neo-Nazi’ and alt-right racists using fake social media posts to falsely claim that Crowder is one of them.
Roger Stone, a contributor to InfoWars, was also banned because of ‘harassment against CNN’. He plans to sue Twitter.
President Donald Trump was banned because a Twitter employee, on their last day, deactivated Trump’s account.
Sheriff David Clarke was temporarily suspended because he tweeted ‘punch them and MAKE THEM TASTE THEIR OWN BLOOD’, yet groups like Antifa and RefuseFacism have numerously and physically done that.
It is delirious to think that there are no bans and does not occur with leftists, such as radical Louis Farrakhan, who is racist and anti semitic. Farrakhan has over 475,000 followers and is verified.
